Tyre Tread Depth Checker
Measure the tread in the main grooves with a gauge, then enter the lowest reading below. The tool tells you what to do.
How to measure
- Park on level ground and clean any mud or stones from the grooves.
- Press the gauge into a main groove until its base sits flat on the tread.
- Measure at the inner edge, the middle and the outer edge, and at three places around the tyre.
- Use the lowest reading.
What the numbers mean
- 7 to 8 mm: typical of a new tyre.
- 5 to 6 mm: good. Keep checking every month.
- 4 mm: wet grip starts to drop.
- 3 mm: plan to replace, especially in heavy rain.
- 1.6 mm or less: replace now. This is the legal minimum in many countries, so check the rule where you live.
Tread is only part of a tyre's condition. Also check the age, the sidewalls and the pressure.
